Support Needed – Helping Ship Wheelchairs to Those in Need
Our trust deed allows donated funds to be used in two important ways:
-
Purchase of wheelchair parts – with tax-deductible receipts available for donors.
-
Covering shipping costs – if no receipt is required, funds can directly assist with transport expenses.
While wheelchair production is ongoing, one of our greatest challenges is covering the cost of international freight. For example:
-
A 20ft container (holding 137 boxed wheelchairs) requires us to purchase the container ($1,800) and cover local handling/port charges ($2,485).
-
The international freight Brisbane to Honiara is $5,839.10 – and this is the cost we are always seeking support for.
-
A 40ft container can hold 306 boxed wheelchairs, doubling the impact if freight costs are met.
We invite Lions Clubs to consider supporting this vital stage of the journey. The wheelchairs themselves are provided free of charge – what we need is help to get them into the hands of those who need them most.
Many of you may have international Lions contacts in countries where wheelchairs are desperately needed. If a club can assist with the freight cost, we will:
-
Supply the wheelchairs at no cost.
-
Cover all local handling charges.
-
Work with Rotary (or local partners) on the ground to ensure the chairs are assembled and distributed directly to people in need – never sold.
This is a practical way Lions Clubs can make a direct, life-changing difference internationally.
