Sometimes the secret to learning to read isn’t in the book — it’s in the wagging tail sitting beside you.
Jayon’s story: The little boy who could.
When Jayon, a Year 2 student, first started reading, he wanted nothing to do with it. Books made him feel overwhelmed and frustrated. He found it hard to stay focused and quickly lost interest - until he met Rosie, a gentle Story Dog.
At first, Jayon would guess words, fidget constantly, and struggle to keep the book still. So his Story Dogs volunteer came up with a simple plan - she held the book and helped Jayon sound out each word while he gently patted Rosie’s back to stay calm and focused.
Week by week, everything began to change. Jayon started reading more confidently. He built a special bond with Rosie, who sat patiently beside him, tail wagging and eyes full of encouragement.
By the end of the term, Jayon had climbed nine reading levels and proudly received the Growth Award at his school’s end-of-year assembly. Rosie was right there to see it all. It was a beautiful moment - proof that confidence grows when a child feels safe and supported.
Every week, over 580 Story Dog teams help children like Jayon discover that reading doesn’t have to feel like a test. It can be calm, joyful, and full of wagging tails.
This Christmas, you can help bring that same joy and confidence to even more children. Because when children read to a dog, reading becomes their superpower.
